Maliheh Clinic Pharmacy Student Opportunity

Happy New Semester Everyone!

We at the Maliheh Clinic are excited to volunteer alongside you!

For those less familiar with the Maliheh Clinic Pharmacy Student Opportunity, here is a brief explanation:

“The mission of the Maliheh Free Clinic is to provide free, same-day access to high-quality urgent medical care for all qualified patients. The Maliheh Free Clinic was founded with the sole purpose to rescue those members of our community who are in the most critical need of our help.”

We have two different interprofessional clinic opportunities:

1)Thursday clinics, where we work with PA students and nurse practitioner students

2)Saturday clinic, where we will work with Medical Students.

Students will work with new patients coming into the clinic for the first time, usually establishing care. As pharmacy students, it is an excellent opportunity as we will be in the exam room asking questions about medications and helping our counterparts with the differential, assessment, and plan. You will only follow one patient during each time that you volunteer and you will follow their progress from intake to discharge.

P1 students will only have the opportunity to shadow another pharmacy student.

P2-P4 students get to practice their therapeutics and OTC knowledge, and if you are stuck, we always have at least one pharmacy coordinator student and Pharmacist Preceptors to help you out. Then, at the end of the visit, you can practice educating patients on any recommended medication or non-pharm interventions before the patient goes home.

How To Sign Up:

Sign up on the co-curricular website! If you have any question reach out to one of us!

Logistics:

Because we have to coordinate with preceptors and other students, we sometimes have to cancel clinic dates for unavoidable reasons. If that were to happen, we, as the coordinators, will reach out to you as soon as we are made aware of the cancelation.

We also recognize that life happens, and if you cannot make a clinic that you signed up for, we understand, but to maintain professionalism, this is the policy:

If it is within 14 days of your assigned clinic date

• Email us coordinators (our emails will be included down below) ASAP.

• You are expected to find someone to cover your shift at the clinic.

• Then let us know who is covering for you, and we can try to help find replacements if you are struggling.

If it is greater than 14 days before your clinic’s day, just remove your name from the signup and let us coordinators know you did, and we will help recruit your replacement. It is always good to try to find a replacement in this situation, but it is not expected.

Lastly,

Thank you so much for volunteering; it does change the lives of the patients we serve, who are often part of an underserved population. I have had so many growing opportunities serving at the Maliheh clinic, and I go several times every semester because it is so fun and meaningful! Please contact me if you have any questions or want to talk more about the clinic!

Best,

Tanner
