Program information:
The VA – Walla, Walla, WA – Jonathan M. Wainwright Memorial VA Medical Center PGY1 Pharmacy Residency is designed to provide residents with experiences that will enhance their knowledge and clinical skills with the goal to provide quality pharmacotherapy in a variety of settings including ambulatory care, home-based primary care, rural care, behavioral health, substance use, telehealth, and administration/management. During the resident’s learning experiences, the resident will provide direct patient care and medication management for chronic disease states.
Fringe Benefits: Health insurance available, annual leave: 13 days (accrued), sick leave: 13 days (accrued), federal holidays: 11 days. No required evening or weekend staffing.
Special Requirements for Acceptance: Applicants must meet requirements for federal employment including 1. US citizenship, 2. graduation from an ACPE accredited School of Pharmacy, and 3. eligible to obtain a license to practice pharmacy in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia. Applicants must then complete PhORCAS™ application which is to include 1. three letters of recommendation, 2. letter of intent, 3. academic transcript, and 4. curriculum vitae.

Site Special Features: The Jonathan M. Wainwright Memorial VA Medical Center is an ambulatory facility. It has an outpatient residential rehab unit, four additional community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs), and two Primary Care Telehealth Outreach Clinics (PTOCs) allowing the VA to provide care in more rural locations in southeastern WA and northeastern OR. This residency program offers opportunities for experiences in ambulatory care, home-based primary care, residential rehab, psychiatry, anticoagulation, and other specialties. Additional learning experiences may be coordinated based on availability and resident interest.

Come join the Walla Walla VA team! The Jonathan M. Wainwright Memorial VA Medical Center, aka Walla Walla VA Medical Center, is a level 3 outpatient medical facility with over 600 employees that serves approximately 21,000 Veterans spanning 16 counties in 3 states. We have a dedicated team who proudly serves our Veteran base to give them the best care – anywhere! The Jonathan M. Wainwright VA sits on a portion of the former grounds of Fort Walla Walla, whose history dates to 1818, when it was first known as a trading post for trappers. Fast forward to the 1920s, a portion of Fort Walla Walla’s grounds was transferred to the federal government and work began in the winter of 1921 to convert fort era grounds and buildings for hospital use. The Walla Walla VA Medical Center officially accepted its first 2 patients on May 10, 1922, and initially operated as a tuberculosis hospital, expanding to a general medical center in 1959, and then to an outpatient facility in the early 1990s. The Walla Walla VA was named after a local war hero, General Jonathan M. Wainwright IV November 11, 1996. Several of the buildings on the facility’s campus can be found on the national historic register.
Why move to Walla Walla? Tucked away at the base of the Blue Mountains is a now not so little town of Walla Walla, Washington, named as the “friendliest small city in the United States” as part of a 2011 Rand McNally’s annual “best of the road” contest. Walla Walla can be considered Washington’s best kept little secret. But that secret is out because today, Walla Walla is a bustling town with a city population of 34,450 (61,283 for the county) with over 120 wineries, a variety of great restaurants, a coffee hut on almost every corner, and great parks and schools (private and public) for all ages. A yearly balloon stampede and county fair plus a professional baseball team, Walla Walla Sweets (named after its famous onion), is just a small part of some great community activities happening in and around Walla Walla. Walla Walla is “the town so nice they named it twice!” Come see for yourself!
